So at the last minute after all of my final school projects were done, and only one freelance assignment to do, I threw together a submission to the Tomie dePaola Art contest a few days ago and turned it in yesterday. I hope it's not too obvious how much I rushed it. Now that I'm done, I see all kinds of stuff I'd like to change. That's what I get for being a "Last Minute Sally".
Here is the scene we were to illustrate:
So they went along and went along until they met Turkey Lurkey
“Good morning, Goosey Loosey, Ducky Daddles, Cocky Locky, Henny Penny,
and Chicken Licken,” said Turkey Lurkey, “where are you going?”
“Oh, Turkey Lurkey, the sky is falling and we are going to tell the King!”
“How do you know the sky is falling?” asked Turkey Lurkey.
“Ducky Daddles told me,” said Goosey Loosey.
“Cocky Locky told me,” said Ducky Daddles.
“Henny Penny told me,” said Cocky Locky.
“Chicken Licken told me,” said Henny Penny
“I saw it with my own eyes, I heard it with my own ears,
and a piece of it fell on my tail!” said Chicken Licken.
“Then I will go with you,” said Turkey Lurkey, “and we will tell the King!”

Is my turkey "Lurky" enough? My Goose "Loosey" enough? Ducky Daddles makes me laugh, though in his big goofy glasses. Watchout for "Squirrely Whirly...he's a punk.
Now that I've seen a few other entries, I'm wishing I had spent more time on it. At least I have a new portfolio piece out of it!
Love your illustration, Stacy! Especially the extra characters. :-D
ReplyDeleteThanks Debbie, yours is really awesome!
ReplyDeleteI am so proud of you for getting this done. I'm with Deb, I love the extra characters and the umbrella is a great touch. Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteThanks Jenn! I'm really shocked I got in done in time.
ReplyDeleteReally cute, Stacy!!! I love the fact you put your characters in clothes and the umbrella is so fun! I also like the castle in the background and just the overall composition...it's bright and playful!
ReplyDeleteThanks Deb! Yours has such a great perspective!
ReplyDeleteWonderful! Love the composition. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteLove the butterfly in the corner! Good luck with this piece! (And no, I couldn't tell it was a last minute job.) (But I'm not an illustrator either)
ReplyDelete:)
Love the expressions on all the characters. Very nice! I checked out your website and portfolio -- you are a great illustrator. Good luck on your adventure! I am now following you on Twitter -- hope to hear good things from you.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comments (and the follow, Eric!)!
ReplyDeleteNow that you've responded to my blog, it shows. Anyway, I enjoyed your art work a lot.
ReplyDeleteThis doesn't look "last-minute" at all- it's lovely! It has been so fun seeing all the different interpretations of the story Tomie chose. I really love how cheery and vibrant yours is. Well done, Stacy, and GOOD LUCK to you!!! :)
ReplyDeleteThat's a lot of detail for last minute. I'm impressed. I love the perspective.
ReplyDeleteThat is a decidedly lurky turkey, Stacy! Reminds me of the disaffected teen boys who would slouch into the high school library and try to hide their grins when I noticed them in a positive way.
ReplyDeleteNice work - hope your entry gets the positive recognition that *it* deserves!

What a vibrant, fresh submission. I wish you all the best with it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all of the nice comments!
ReplyDeleteI'm loving that the fox is looking kind of playful back there!
ReplyDeleteThanks Kristen!
DeleteI like your illustration as well. It was bright and fun to look at. I was trying to figure out the medium. Not sure if you were using a computer program? What is your favorite medium to work with?
ReplyDeleteJackie, I mainly use Illustrator and Photoshop for my illustrations. Thanks for your nice comment!
